12 Best Affiliate Marketing tips for Beginners

Affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to make money blogging and there are little tips you must know in order to get the best out of it. There are four major ways to monetize a blog, of course we know it; Google adsense/ direct advertising, Affiliate marketing, Services and creating products. I don’t really know the most lucrative of it all but in my opinion I think its affiliate marketing. Are you getting the best out of affiliate marketing? Are you implementing some affiliate marketing tips and strategies on your blog? If it’s not working then I think there are some steps you might be missing.

Affiliate marketing tips – Practical method

1. Cloak Affiliate links

First things first, avoid those ugly affiliate links by using a link cloaker. It’s the best way to make your affiliate link decent and short and at the same time increase your click through rate. Normally, which would you go for in

http://www.shareasale.com/r.cfm?B=242693&U=865863&M=28169&urllink= and viralwriter.com/recommends/pro-plus/

You’re definitely going to go for the shorter link. I was previously using pretty link but I switched to thirsty affiliate (self-preference). Now this is the difference, if you’re using pretty link your affiliate link is going to look like this: http://yourdomain.com/affproduct but if you’re using thirsty affiliate your affiliate link will look like this: http://yourdomain.com/recommends/affproduct or http://yourdomain/uses/affproducts and more depending on your choice. For those using SEOPressor v5, you can use its link cloaking feature and save yourself a plugin space but if you’re already using any of the above affiliate link cloaker then you can continue with it instead of facing a whole lot of stress.

2. Write Reviews

Writing reviews is another working strategy and in my opinion I think it’s the best affiliate marketing tip. Here you’re talking about a product on just one page and this will give your readers more insight on the product you’re reviewing. If you really want to get the best out of reviews then you must mentions the features of the products you’re promoting (pros and cons), another way is to also compare your products with competitors as it’ll convince your readers into buying the product you’re promoting.

Getting the best out of Reviews

Don’t let the chronological order of your blog drown your reviews in the oceans of your archive instead you can use these little tips to make your reviews visible to your visitors

  • Creating a special category for reviews is the first thing you must consider. If you look up I’m sure you’re going to see my review category on the navigation bar, implementing this makes your review more visible and accessible for visitors and readers interested in it.
  • Use a rating plugin to rate the product you’re reviewing, the number of stars determines the quality of the product. The plugin I’m using for this is Author hReview and I configured it to display recent reviews on my sidebar, check it out.
  • Use your one of your reviews as a static page making it more visible to your readers. It ran across my mind but I don’t think that’s a good idea, you might lose your readers. It depends on you though but I don’t really recommend it.

As a matter of fact, the more visible your reviews (and affiliate links in general) the higher the chance of making more sales.

3. Use Affiliate Links on your Post

I know it’s a no-brainer but I still have to include it for formality sake and to waste some white space too. Instead of using direct links on products you’re recommending, try as much as possible to register for their affiliate program and use affiliate links no matter how small the commission is. Selling a product of $10 is easier than selling a product of $100. The price of a product doesn’t actually matter, if you’ve used a product, you can recommend it to your readers regardless of how cheap or expensive it is, it all depends on the quality of the product you’re promoting. Try to cultivate the habit of blending affiliate links in your blog post and don’t depend on reviews only.

4. Email Marketing

The money is in the list, that’s a very common saying and I’m sure you know that. Are you building your list the right way? The best way to do this is to use optin forms around your blog and bait your visitors with an offer they can’t afford to bite. It can be an ecourse, ebook, premium theme or plugin (for free) and many more. One thing I noticed about email marketing is that if you promote affiliate product, you’ll make some sales followed by a high rate of unsubscribers (5% – 10% or more). Don’t use your list as money making machine by bombarding your subscribers with products but minimize the interval and build your subscriber’s trust first.

5. Create a Resources or Tools Page

This is a special page where you list all the tools you use on your blog (both free and premium) thereby making it easier for your readers to see all your affiliate products at a glance. You can give a little summary of the products or link to its review page (if you have one) for a better understanding. To make your resources page more compelling, you have to include banners to the products you’re promoting. I did something related to that, take a look at my resources page and see what it looks like.

6. Make Use of Banners

Another advantage is making use of banners on your blog, it could be your sidebar, footer, above your content or header. You can get the banners of affiliate products you’re promoting from affiliate companies and implement the code on your blog. Do you know that banners do get the highest click through rate than other tips mentioned above? This is due to its attractive pictures and descriptions, it works more if those pictures are animated.

7. Add a Bonus to your Product

I never knew of this until i recently read some reviews on other blogs. You can personally give discount to your readers after they’ve purchased your product. With this, you’ll lure them into buying the product from you alone. It works especially when there are lots of competitors promoting the same product. Imagine selling a product for $50, getting 50% commission which is $25 and giving your readers $10 out of your commission. This means your reader actually bought the product for $40, got the calculation? Guiding how to use a product after purchase is also another cool bonus. Promising a personal discount in a review works like magic.

8. Be Patient

Actually the reason why most bloggers give up is not because of traffic but because they didn’t make a dime in their first few months of blogging. I was so inspired when a friend made his first affiliate sale on a year old blog. Seriously, are you going to keep up if you don’t make money blogging for a whole 365 days? Getting the best out of affiliate marketing is not an easy task especially for new bloggers. I almost gave up when I didn’t make a dime in my first and second month. Hey guys, blogging is not a get rich quick scheme. I’ve seen a situation where you’ll get 500+ clicks to a product with no sales and I’ve also seen that of 10 clicks with 5 sales. Patience is a virtue remember?

9. Spend to make

It takes money to make money and if you really want to excel in affiliate marketing then you need to spend some money, buy products, use it and know its quality and then recommend it to your readers. Most products out there requires you to become a customer before you can have access to their affiliate program so I don’t think it’s possible to make money through affiliate marketing if you don’t buy those products. This is one of the reason why you must only recommend products you use or products with doubtless quality.

10. Monetize Early

The little monetization mistake bloggers make is that they wait for a specific period before they start monetizing their blog. There’s no specific time to start affiliate marketing, you can promote products and services from your first day of blogging. Of course passion comes first but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t focus on making money online right? If you have no product then there’s no big deal in signing up as an affiliate with your hosting company, domain company or your blog (premium)theme, make sense? Well these are the affiliate marketing tips most of us don’t know in our early days of blogging, though it’s not late, you can still go and correct those mistakes you’ve made.

11. Your Readers First

Your readers are the one to buy your affiliate products and even share your quality content thereby attracting more readers which means more buyers. If you really want to get the best out of affiliate marketing then you have to choose the right product to promote. The first thing to do is to put yourself in your readers shoe and think of what they would buy, get the affiliate product and promote it or you can even create your products and offer it to your readers. One thing you must know; the cost of your product mustn’t drive your readers away but must be stated according to its quality. The cheaper your product, the more the sales and vice versa.

12. Be Honest

All products has pros and cons and i don’t see anything bad in stating them out. Make sure you state out what you hate about the product and what you like about it. If you’re promoting a product then you must let your readers know everything about it before they make up their mind in going for it else you’ll draw disappointment on their face. Trust me, if this happens they’ll never come back to your blog to buy a product or whatsoever from you because they’ve lost their trust in you.

Affiliate marketing is not just the only way to make money blogging but do you know that you can create products and services while others promote you? Instead of being the marketer, others are going to be your marketer, they promote your product and of course a commission will be involved. Have you ever thought of that? I’ll definitely hop into that soon and you can too. Your product can be a plugin, theme, ebook, membership site or more. Well, It doesn’t occur in a day and becoming a successful blogger doesn’t occur over night but remember this, the journey to a thousand miles begins with one step.

Yet Another Related Bonus

Affiliate marketing is all about split testing, if A doesn’t work then try B and if it doesn’t work out, why not give C a try, one is definitely going to work out. Don’t just depend on a product but try to be an affiliate on varieties of products.

If you don’t know the products to go for, you can peep into the resources page of bloggers in your niche and see what they’re promoting, invest in the product and promote it, of course you’re going to make more profit than the cost of buying it, It rocks.

Do you know affiliate marketing can lead to traffic? well this is how it works, you can host a contest after writing a review and the winner gets the product. It’s a win-win situation, you get more traffic and buyers and the winner (of course just one person) gets the product for free.

The affiliate marketing tips mentioned are not going to work if you don’t have traffic. There’s no way you can make money blogging if you don’t have traffic and in order to get the best results you need to promote your blog. Good to see you here buddy,

At last, the guide is here and I’m sure you find it helpful as you fire up affiliate marketing on your blog.

According to your question, the best way to choose a perfect product is to read reviews and if any product falls in your interest then go for it. Not just any product but the one that’ll also be helpful to your readers

    • says

      Good point Muhammad,
Affiliate marketing has a lot of potentials and advantages but it’ll definitely not work out if we don’t do it the right way.
The mistake most bloggers make is lack of patience and this can lead to a blogger giving up. Patience has a great role to play and blogging is not a get rich quick scheme.

  3. says

    Hi Gilbert,

Practically all the tips you presented here are useful. I like very much the idea of creating reviews with pros and cons. Personally I would include a video in the review to show the product in action or how it works.
I also like the idea of a rating plugin that will allow the readers to rate a product with a simple click of a button. Many shy visitors will click on that.
Resource page? Excellent idea. I think all blogs must have a resource page.
Banners are very good. Even more interesting are the bonuses. Each affiliate must create his own exclusive bonuses. Using the bonuses provided by the product’s author is not a good idea as everybody will do that and you must stand out from the crowd.
One more tip. Although some sites provide great tools for their affiliates and good copy, I wouldn’t recommend using the respective copy. I think it is a god idea to write the copy yourself. Yes, you can use the provided copy but if you want to stand out you will write it yourself.

    Have a wonderful day

      Hi Silviu,

I’m glad you support the ideas mentioned above. creating videos like tutorials on how to use the product, this will show more of its features and persuade readers into buying the product. I never thought of that but it really works. My favorite strategy is writing reviews included with a bonus, that’s going to make you stand out of competitors and boost sales like you said.

I’ve seen sites with pre-made promotional copies, though it works but I don’t support the idea. It’ll look somehow if I should visit three sites marketing the a product with the same copy. Writing for our self is better, thanks for recommending that.

      Have a wonderful day too.

Great tips on how to make some “moolah” with the blog. I just added a resource page on my site. I think this is a great page to have on your site to disclose what products you have used or use on your site and you like.

You’re so right…making sales comes down to traffic regardless of whether you have your own products or affiliate products. If you can get the traffic then in time you will make some sales.

Thanks for sharing your tips on this subject…you’ve done an awesome job with your resource page. Have a great week.

Yes, I would accept all your points what you have stated here because, recently I made my first affiliate sale just by the words which you have written.

Let me explain what I did exactly, I got my first affiliate sale as a Blog Engage account. So for it, what I did was, just wrote a review based article about Blog engage blogging community and promoted. As you said, I used some 3-4 affiliate link within the article and one banner ad. Apart from it, it was all my promotion in Facebook. Twitter and Google+. Finally, after 3-4 days of the article being live on my site, I got a mail that I have got a affiliate commission for Blog Engage which was a cloud nine moment for me :).

So readers, it is as simple as Gilbert Samuel have mentioned here. So give a try and you will know the taste of success in Affiliate Marketing. All the Best :)

My first review on SEOpressor worked the same way too, and that was my first commission then, of course I did some promotions too and I’m sure I was definitely more happier than you were then.

Thanks for the recommendation, I’m sure this will give them a boost into keeping up with affiliate marketing. Have a wonderful day :)

      Hi Sumanth,

I was waiting for someone to say something about it, you’re the first. Google adsense is not the worst (don’t mind my language) if you check it out, you’ll notice that I had to bracked “depending on your niche”. There are some niche that receives as low as 5cents per click while some niche receives as high as 50 – 100 bucks per click, so google adsense is not worst (but worst in some niche) hope you understand, I guess I’ll have to update the post for better understanding. But I must confess, affiliate marketing is better than adsense and of course you’re right, adsense is good for a blog with (targeted) traffic.

I’m glad you shared your views and I don’t see anything harsh in your comment buddy. Have a wonderful week ahead.

Good to see you here mate, you’re right about putting readers first, without it I don’t think there will be success in affiliate, other tips are also perfect. Have a wonderful day and see you around

  9. says

    Hey Gilbert,

I think everyone should be doing affiliate marketing. I mean why not! As it was explained to me early on. You’ll meet people who need programs or services so they’re bound to ask you what you use. Let them purchase them through your link if that’s the case then. They’re happy they bought it from you and you’re happy you made a commission. Tada!

Now depending on what you’re doing you can set things up differently. When I first started doing affiliate marketing I set up sites just for certain products and drove traffic to those. They are blogs where you can chat about the product and share your opinions. It worked very well and I still have those sites up and they still are producing.

I think having a resource page is smart. I had one and then took it down and then had people emailing me for links to what I use and promote so I put it back up. It’s just easier to save time and can benefit you for sure.

I think this is an area everyone should venture into because the way it was taught to me is if you can promote other people’s products and have success then you can promote anything. Boy is that ever true.

      Hi Adrienne,

You’re right, everyone should be doing affiliate marketing but to my surprise, not everyone know how it works. Why? They think it’s something big and they won’t bother to explore it and how it works due to this reason. I love the way you explained it, seriously! It’s as simple as that.

Wow! Never heard of that, setting up a new site for an affiliate product? So it works? Well one I know of is setting up sites for your personal products. I’m glad they are working fine for you and thanks for giving us an insight.

Having a resource page can be the archive of all your free and premium products, I’ve been seeing good results since when I implemented it but I can’t really say if it’s from there because I didn’t track it. At least, it’s something everyone must have on their blog.

Yup, that’s true. Affiliate merketing rocks. Have a wonderful day.

  11. says

Gilbert, nice write up here! Your tips are really cool and I think following them to the letter would produce positive results for anyone who is promoting any good affiliate product. Doing affiliate promotion is not too easy, but having the right strategies would definitely help you make the difference.

Monetization: There are so many schools of thought in this regard. While some believe it is counter-productive to start promoting products on relatively young blogs, others feel you should promote as soon as you can. But I personally think it is better to first get the trust of your readers and get some traffic as well as interactivity on your blog before attempting to sell. Otherwise, starting too early might bring some distrust, failure, frustration and eventually making the individual to quit.

Spending money: This is one place where a lot of bloggers get it wrong. They want everything for free. Unfortunately, free things are expensive in the long run. Even if things are difficult, there is need to spend some money to get those things that are really essential for your success.

Honesty: This, in my opinion, is the greatest thing to take care of. You must be honest in your reviews, recommendations and in dealing with your readers. This is what would make them trust you and buy whatever products you recommend. But if for any reason you decide to be dishonest, you might as well forget about promoting products, because nobody would look your way let alone buying whatever you are promoting.

Bonus: Yes offering bonuses is a way of encouraging people to buy through your link. Of course we all know that people love free things; and when you offer that price difference, no matter how little, they want to take leverage. So giving bonuses could be the bait that you need to sell your products.

Link cloaking: Like you rightly said, cloaking of links is a way of making the links cleaner and less obvious as affiliate links. Besides, I heard some people could steal your profits if you don’t cloak your links. I think Clickbank already takes care of that now. What do you advise those who already use Pretty link to do? Would changing their plugins to thirsty affiliate not have effects on the links they already have using pretty link?

Reviews: As bloggers, I think this should be our strongest point because blogging is all about writing, presenting ideas, giving out information, etc, and there is no better way to share your knowledge of an affiliate product than writing a review on it. However, your review must be honest and not lopsided if you want your readers to take your word and buy the product. Try to present both sides of the coin and let them make their choices.

Thanks once again for this great write up. It is truly informative and helpful. Do have a lovely weekend.

Link cloaking and writing reviews will work like a charm. Write up a good review and put some cloaked links here and there….and wait… I hope this will work with some good old promotion on Social Media.

Giving ‘discounts’ to users is again a killer strategy. It gives visitors a good ‘reason’ to buy using your link.

At the end of the day, I guess it is business with ‘honesty’ and ‘integrity’ that counts :) Good write up Gilbert.

Hey Robert, my blog was hacked last week, that was what caused those weird letters, it’s has been resolved and everything is back to normal. See you around.

P.S. All your comments fell in my spam folder, well they’ve been approved.
