monetization mistake bloggers make

1. Not Marketing Your Blog

The first monetization mistake bloggers make is having lack of marketing effort and idea. If you are going to set up advertisements on your blog then you are also going to need traffic and in order to get that traffic, you are going to have to effectively market your blog. You should take some time out of the beginning of every week to plan out an elaborate some marketing strategy for the week. At the end of the week, you can reflect upon your strategy by seeing what you did good or bad on and use that knowledge as a basis for the next week. Developing a solid marketing strategy is the first step to making a profit from your blog and of course, the commonest monetization mistake bloggers make. One of the best strategy of marketing your blog is guest blogging, Submit few guest post on blogs and use your author bio to tell the world who you are. This is one of the trick freelance writers use in getting clients.

2. Having a Poor Theme

Another monetization mistake bloggers make is choosing a poor theme for their blog. ย If you want to build up a profitable blog then your theme must be unique, easy to navigate, stunning, and good on the eyes. This makes your blog professional. If you are ready to swipe out your credit card for a professional and cheap theme then I’ll recommend Elegant themes and theme junkie. These themes are for speed junkies like me, the faster your blog speed, the more the visitor and the higher your ranking. Go check out those themes now. A perfect way to know if your blog has a good theme or not is to ask other bloggers for their honest opinion. Receiving feedback from someone other than yourself will put you on the right track to building up a profitable blog.

3. Low Quality Content

In case youโ€™re unaware, content has a hand in monetizing your blog. As a blogger thatโ€™s ready to make money blogging, you should put in a good amount of effort into all of your articles. People reading your blog can easily tell if what you are reading is good or bad. If you want to keep people on your site longer then you should write unique and engaging articles. There are probably hundreds of other blogs in your niche and the competition is growing higher every day. To beat the competition and get those readers to your blog, you need to write a genuine and quality content. This will provide your readers with great value and then you will definitely see an increase in profit.

4. Lack of Planning

Failing to plan is one big monetization mistake bloggers make. This is a quote by Benjamin Franklin;

if you fail to plan, youโ€™re planning to fail.

Blogging is no exception. If you want to build an authority blog that gets thousands of visitors each day and fills up your piggy bank then you should create an elaborate plan and a list of goals that will help you get there. Things don’t happen by chance in this world, they happen by taking action. You should create a solid plan and write down all of your goals. Doing so will benefit you along the way.

5. Lack of Testing

One reason that bloggers fail to make a profit from their blog is that they do not test out different things. You should take the time to split test everything on your blog; the theme, the opt-in form location, the banners, affiliate strategies and many others. Change up everything and see what works best. You should also test out the different type of products that you are promoting. Maybe one product will convert better than another and the only way to find these things out is to split test!

6. Wrong Mindset

If you want to build up a profitable blog then you need to have a positive mindset. Yes, you may not be seeing any results yet but everyone had to start at the bottom before they could work their way up! If you stay positive and make it through the hard path ahead then things will eventually get easier. No matter what you do, don’t give up, keep on trying and eventually, you will succeed.

Over to you

I quite agree with this. Often times bloggers make certain mistakes that are tantamount to their blog’s failure knowingly or unknowingly. But, I think it would go a long way if there are a lot of sensitizing write-ups like this. So, bloggers could see what they’ve been doing wrong and make appropriate correction to it/them. Thanks.

The information that you provide here is helpful for anyone that is willing to take it seriously. However, many may not do so. Myself, I find marketing my site is more difficult since my site does not fit into any of the normal niches’ that I have come across. My site is more about thoughts and opinions and I have had little success in finding other sites to link to that could support my opinions. And as for guest blogging I have not found anyone that is willing to have me guest blog for them based on the fact that I only write my opinion on subjects, much like a talk show host does when he is giving his opinion about a subject. Yes when I do find something to support what I am saying then I use it, but most times I have been unable to do so. I will work harder at using much of what you have said in here, and attempt to do more of what you listed as good practices here.

Good read! I definitely agree the most about having a positive outlook. Too many people think the fast track and if they aren’t raking in big time success after a month, they are ready to quit. Every blog niche is different and Google acts strange, so everyone will not have the same success rate. This takes time!

    Hi Alvin,
Welcome on board as a viral writer as well. Your points are of course very well laid. I like your 6th point the most with respect to having the wrong mindset. The mind is everything and if you get it wrong from the onset in your mind, then you’re likely to fail!

I think that traffic is the most important aspect before you begin monetizing your site. If you don’t have traffic, then it does not matter how much monetization you are doing. Chances are you won’t make any income.

Mindset also plays a huge role. If you think you won’t make any income…chances are you won’t. Thanks for sharing these tips.

    Hi Sam,

I totally agreed with your points here, many bloggers so what faster than their shadow in blog-osphere many time. There is time for everything so say the bible, some reasonable time should be take in promoting our blog post, designing and planing for our blog. And I can say these are some of the reason why I so much believed in setting quality and achievable goal.

I agree with all of these points you wrote about. I am new to blogging but I try to keep up with latest advice.

I treat my blog like I do eBay. I write a few articles a week to keep my audience informed and engaged. I buy and list many items a week to keep my sales up. Sales were really slow at first but I kept with it. I did not know everything about eBay at first but I learned A LOT from trial and error. I will do the same with blogging. It’s not all about the money, I think its all about the experience and learning!

    Great post!

Hey Alvin, and welcome to Sam’s blog – it surely is nice to see you here. ๐Ÿ™‚

Very detailed post! I love all the point you have highlighted here, most specially that of “Mindset”. I think without the right mindset, there wouldn’t have been the word “Great People”, or perhaps “Successful People”. Thanks for sharing this lovely and widely accepted knowledge with us. You are the best and please do have yourself a F.A.B.U.O.U.S weekend bro. ๐Ÿ˜€

    Hi Gilbert,

Market your blog, write quality content and have a positive mindset. I think these are the most important ideas to take from this post.
I have some doubts about asking an honest opinion from other bloggers.

There is a kind of principle that seems very influential on the blogosphere: “If you cannot say something nice, don’t say anything at all”.

According to this mindset the comment section of your blog is not for debate and learning. Comments are just a place were you must be nice, encourage people and be positive all the time. When you see something wrong, you must not tell that blog owner. No, no, NO!!!
You must not contradict and upset him or her. If you do this, you are labelled as impolite, rude etc. What then? Just go and find another blog to comment where you can say something nice.
This way you will never know when you do something wrong. When I look to the comments made on my blog, I see only positive and nice things. It is like everything is extraordinary and my blog is perfect. It would be very hard to find a critical comment on my blog. Unfortunately, this is what I see on many other blogs, too.

    Have a wonderful day

Another common mistake is showing Google that you’ve made a website exclusively to earn from the ads. This is to say that you need to wait a bit before displaying any ads on your pages. Use this time to generate high quality content, link weight, etc.

    Hi Gilbert,
I must say this is a very good post, most people enter into blogging with the sole objective without working on alot of things. I think in order to start making money, you should work on your blog seo, market you blog very well, do not focus on money but on giving back to the society through writing quality and well researched contents and also connecting with people and like you said try out different things for example if you are not making money from adsense you can change your banner position and size and see how it goes.
    Thanks for sharing.
